Experience Italy's Black Truffle Festival in Medieval Norcia Village

Truffles, Spritz, and Medieval Charm: A Winter Visit to Nero Norcia

When most envision a February escape, they dream of tropical beaches or mountain ski retreats. But for those in the know, there’s a far more unique winter destination waiting to be explored in the heart of Italy: Norcia, during its annual Nero Norcia black truffle festival. Just a scenic 30-minute drive from our coliving village of Vallo di Nera, this beloved event immerses you in Italy’s culinary soul, where truffles, tradition, and community come to life under crisp winter skies.

From the shimmering medieval stone rooftops dusted in snow to the scent of porcini mushrooms wafting through the cobbled streets, Norcia in February is an unmissable experience that blends culture, cuisine, and charm.

From Vallo di Nera to Truffle Paradise

Your journey begins in Vallo di Nera, our beautifully restored medieval village coliving retreat nestled among the hills of Umbria. On a sunny February morning, you hop into the car and begin your ascent toward Norcia. As you climb higher, the terrain subtly shifts — green hills give way to distant snow-capped peaks, sunlight gleams on ancient rooftops, and the cold mountain air is invigorating but not harsh.

By the time you arrive in Norcia, the streets are buzzing. It’s Nero Norcia, the region's most important market-exhibition dedicated to the famous black truffle. Taking place from February 21st to 22nd, 2026, this event attracts everyone from local truffle hunters and artisans to world-class chefs and culinary enthusiasts. Whether you're here to taste, learn, or just soak in the sensory feast — Norcia welcomes you with open arms.

A Festival Full of Flavor and Faces

Once inside the medieval city gates, it’s easy to be swept away by the aromas of roasted meats, earthy truffles, and aged cheeses drifting through the crisp air. Rows of stalls line the piazza and narrow alleys, each adorned with beautiful displays of tartufo nero pregiato (prized black truffle), handcrafted sausages, locally produced honeys, and artisan cheeses.

What’s striking is the sense of community — not just from the villagers of Norcia, but from across Umbria. You’ll bump into truffle foragers with stories to share, restaurateurs scouting the best ingredients for their spring menus, and artisans offering you a taste of their finest salumi with proud smiles.

This isn’t just any market. It’s a cultural ritual.

Aperitivo in the Heart of Norcia

After you’ve wandered the stalls and perhaps secured a small tin of truffle butter or a wedge of pecorino al tartufo, it’s time to take a break. Grab a seat at a café on Piazza San Benedetto and order a classic Aperol Spritz — even in winter, the Italians know how to do aperitivo right.

As church bells ring and children play nearby, you sip your drink, cheeks rosy from the mountain air. Truffle dogs trot alongside proud vendors. The scent of garlic and black truffle hits the air again as a nearby street chef slices open a truffle-stuffed porchetta.

In that moment, you’re no longer an outsider. You’re living la dolce vita, winter edition.

What Else to See and Do Nearby

While Nero Norcia is undoubtedly the star of the season, don’t miss these surrounding gems:

  • Our coliving village, Vallo di Nera – Just 30 km from Norcia, this stunning hamlet offers coworking in renovated stone buildings, hiking along the Nera river, and storytelling nights with locals. It’s the perfect base for slow travel in Umbria.

  • Castelluccio di Norcia – Famous for its lentils and panoramic high plains, even in winter this nearby mountain plateau offers unforgettable views.

  • Monte Sibillini National Park – Adventure seekers can try winter hikes and explore the snow-dusted trails around Norcia.

What to Try: A Taste of Umbria

Let your palate lead the way. Be sure to sample:

  • Tagliatelle al Tartufo Nero – House-made pasta tossed with shaved black truffle, butter, and just a touch of local parmigiano.

  • Norcia Sausages – Made using age-old curing techniques and local ingredients, often infused with fennel or even truffle.

  • Pecorino al Tartufo – A sharp, aged sheep’s milk cheese layered with earthy truffle.

  • Lentils from Castelluccio – Nutty and firm, these lentils often appear in warming stews throughout the season.

  • Local Wines – Try a smooth Sagrantino or a crisp Trebbiano Spoletino depending on your pairing.

A Winter Invitation to Slow Down

Visiting Norcia during the BLACK TRUFFLE FESTIVAL isn't just a culinary indulgence — it's an immersion in the rich, authentic rhythms of Umbrian life. It’s the kind of trip that satisfies the senses and soothes the soul.

And it’s even better when you call our Dolce Vita Coliving village in Vallo di Nera your home base. After a day filled with tastings, chats, and snow-fringed views, return to the quiet comfort of our medieval borgo. Join fellow digital nomads by the fireplace, share a bottle of red from the day's discoveries, and maybe even plan your own truffle-themed dinner in our communal kitchen.

There’s so much more to the Umbrian winter than meets the eye.

Come experience it for yourself. Stay with us in Vallo di Nera, and make February your month of flavor, connection, and discovery.Italian Supermarkets: Farmers Market Quality at Your Fingertips

Travel Diary from Umbria, Italy

On my first full day at _Dolce Vita Coliving_—a dreamy remote work haven nestled in a medieval village in Umbria—I set out for an ordinary chore: my first supermarket run. I expected the typical stock-up of standard groceries. What I found instead was a total revelation about everyday Italian life.

As I walked into the local commercial supermarket (yes, just your standard chain store) I was instantly drawn to the fruit and vegetable section. It felt more like a farmer’s market than any supermarket I’ve seen in the UK. The vegetables weren’t shrink-wrapped in plastic. They weren’t all shaped the same. In fact, they looked like they came straight from the soil—still earthy, vibrant, and perfectly imperfect.

From plump heirloom tomatoes in a dozen reds and oranges, to deep-green zucchinis and oddly-shaped but sweet-smelling peaches, everything glowed with freshness. It was clear that Italians expect high-quality ingredients every day—not just on market day.

And then, the meat counter. There, you’ll find paper-thin slices of prosciutto crudo expertly folded by the butcher, fresh mortadella with delicate pistachio flecks, local salame, porchetta, fresh ham—it’s not just food, it's culinary art. Don’t be afraid to ask for “un assaggio” (a taste)! The staff are usually warm and generous.

Trip Details

  • Stops: Local supermarket in Vallo di Nera area, nearby towns for extra flair—Spoleto, Foligno, and Vallo di Nera itself.

  • Duration: 1–2 hours food shopping, or make it a half-day adventure if you include a stop in a nearby historic town for lunch or sightseeing.

  • Difficulty: Easy, suitable for all. A basic level of Italian or a translation app helps.

  • What to Bring: A shopping bag or two (Italians rarely offer plastic bags), cash or card, and your appetite. If you're staying at Dolce Vita Coliving, a backpack is perfect for the winding cobbled walk back.

Nearby Cultural Stops

After shopping, wander through Spoleto, a historic gem known for the Festival dei Due Mondi and its magnificent Roman theater. Or visit Foligno, set along the Topino river, where the rhythm of everyday life dances between tradition and understated beauty. Of course, Vallo di Nera itself is like walking through time—a medieval village untouched by modern stress, where stone houses and local legends invite slow discovery.

Foods & Drinks to Try

Seek out Pecorino cheese, locally made olive oil, wild boar ragu, and lentils from Castelluccio. Don’t miss a glass of Montefalco red wine or a cold Peroni birra for something lighter. Try truffle-based spreads and fresh egg pasta at nearly any local deli corner.

Living at Dolce Vita Coliving means discovering that even a trip to the supermarket can be part of your Italian adventure. Whether it’s the flavor of a sun-warmed tomato, the friendly smile from behind the meat counter, or a slow-strolling afternoon through historic alleys, this place invites you to rethink your daily routine—one moment of la dolce vita at a time.
